Just wondering what every ones uses in their nest boxes, coops, and runs,I have been using the pine shaving but finding some of my chickens will try and eat smaller bits, which I know is not good for them.Hay seems to cause a lot of problems as well.I have 2 cages that are wooden floors and 3 that are dirt floors. So other than the chickens wanting to eat the shaving,Which do you all prefer and thanks for any info and suggestion...

A prefer shavings, from my experience the absorb liquids better and insulate really well. Chickens love playing in shavings!

I use straw in my nest boxes only. On the floor area of there coops it is dirt:) Everything stays nice and dry and if my girls would stop throwing out the straw I would love the stuff! Ha ha ha!

I have been using coconut shavings. It's supposed to absorb bacteria. The chicks seem to like it. Also, it lasts longer than hay.

Dirt is great! That sounded weird. ha ha Do you have an actual floor to your coop or is it just the ground?

My dad told me to work smarter not harder:) Cool thing about my set up is worms are now gathering under the coop and helping things to decay and breakdown quickly!
